We've all been there: You're busy making that favourite cake or pie and it calls for some ingredient you thought you had in your grocery cupboard, but as it turns out, you are without and now is not the time to run to the shop.

A better solution would be to learn about other ingredients you can use as a substitute for what you're missing.

While no two ingredients are quite the same, a little ingenuity can go a long way toward.

If you have any clever ingredient hacks remember to comment below.

Buttermilk

Substitute buttermilk with yogurt.

Corn Starch

Flour should suffice for any recipe calling for corn starch.

Lemon Juice

If your recipe is calling for lemon juice and you are stuck, replace with vinegar, white wine, or lime juice.

Worcestershire Sauce

If you need a quick substitute try steak sauce.

If your recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire, you can replace with a mixture of 2 teaspoons of soy sauce, 1/4 teaspoon of lemon juice, 1/4 teaspoon of sugar, and a dash of hot sauce.

Bread crumbs

Replace with dry bread or crushed cornflakes

Egg

Use 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce in place of one egg in most baking recipes. You can also use 1/4 cup of mashed banana (from about half a banana) instead of one egg when baking.

Butter

Replace with clean cooking oil

Mass

Need to add a cup of mass to your dish? Replace it with 250ml milk and 20ml lemon juice or vinegar

Note: Substituting one ingredient for another should only be done when you don’t have the necessary ingredient on hand in your kitchen. Substitutions can change the flavor and outcome of the finished dish.
