Five uncommon uses of salt
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Salt is great for adding flavour to your food, but did you know that salt is not only good for cooking?
Although you have sea salt, table salt, and Kosher salt - which can all be used for cooking, there are also other types of salts including Himalayan salt, which can be used for spa treatments, smoked salt, grey salt, coarse salt, and Epsom salt.
Let's look at the uncommon uses of salt:
Salt can help your stitched wound heal faster
"You can bath in salty water or use a cloth that's been soaked in salty water to care for your stitched wound. The salty water helps the wound to dry and heal faster," says Nurse Refentse Lebogo, who works at Pretoria West Hospital.
PRECAUTION: It's always best to consult your doctor first before using this method.
Colorfast your clothes
Bought a new brightly-colored dress or shirt, or even material that you are hoping to make an outfit with? The best way to help set the fabric dye is to soak the item in salt water overnight. Just pour a quarter cup of salt into water in a tub or bucket and leave your item inside overnight. You can even add vinegar if you want to. The salty water will help the colour of the fabric to not fade.
Clean carpets, sinks, and takkies
Spilled wine on your carpet? Don't worry. Salt is a catalyst for ingredients such as vinegar and can be used for cleaning a number of things including carpets, certain types of shoes like white takkies, and even your sink. All you need is to pour it in water, add vinegar, then you are ready to go. The benefit of using salt as a detergent is that it is not harsh and therefore won't harm your carpets, unlike other harsh chemicals.
Cleans spinach
Wash your spinach in salty water to ensure that it is thoroughly cleaned.
Prevent fruits from browning
Worried about your apples or pears turning brown? Just place them in salty water for a couple of minutes before refrigerating them. Use 1/2 a teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of cold water. This will prevent the skin of the fruit from changing colour. It will also help keep them fresher for longer.
