Gauteng man lands himself in hot water with police for planting vegetables on the pavement of his home
Updated | By Lifestyle Reporter
Djo Bankuna, a man living in Gauteng, received some unexpected visitors recently. Metro police were at his front door demanding that he removes the vegetables he planted outside his home on the pavement.
According to a Facebook post, Djo explains that his sin was to plant a vegetable garden on the pavement and not grass or flowers.
He was informed by the police that only flowers or grass are permitted to be planted on the visible pavement outside his home, not cabbage or spinach or any type of vegetable.

Djo says in the post that he was instructed by the police officers to apply for a permit from his local council, which he attempted to do. However, he came to learn that there is no such by-law in place as informed.

After once again going back and forth with his local police, Mr Bankuna has until the 14th of September 2021 to remove his vegetable garden from the pavement.
In a follow-up post, as can be seen below, Djo shares why he started planting vegetables. His wife is a social worker and enjoys giving things to people she works with, like vegetables. It has also been a saving method for the family.
According to Djo, if the police continue with their threats, he will chop down his vegetation garden.
