Heritage Day recipes: South African food you have to eat

How many of these traditional South African foods have you tried?
Food blogger Landi Govender is sharing some of her favourite South African dishes.
The Tocka Blog founder likes to put her own twist to local favourites with delicious results.
These recipes are just in time for Heritage Day.

Samp & Beans Risotto
How to make it:
Ingredients
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped finely
4 Tablespoons of butter
2 x 400g cans samp-and-bean mix
250ml cream
2 tablespoons of coriander, finely chopped, plus extra for garnish
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Method:
- Sautè the onion and garlic in butter in your pan for 5 minutes, or until translucent and fragrant.
- Add the canned samp-and-bean mix and cream, stirring until the cream is well absorbed and the texture is similar to that of a risotto.
- Simmer on a low heat for 5 minutes.
- Add chopped coriander. Stir to combine and season to taste.

"This has got to be one of my favourite comfort dishes... The perfect blend of spices, and the perfect amount of gravy for a delicious bunny chow made using freshly baked bread," says Landi.

Malva Pudding Fudge Sundae
No wedding or South African function is complete without Malva pudding. This twist on the delicious dessert will make you want it even more!
"I’ve layered my sundae with malva pudding, frozen custard and amarula fudge sauce which is out of this world," says Landi.
Milk tart/melktert
Milk tart is a South African favourite. It's hard to resist!

"Can't go wrong with a pot full of this stuff. Chicken and prawn breyani is my husband's favourite, he literally went into a trance when I mentioned that I'll be making this dish," says Landi.
Peppermint Crisp Tart Caramel Blondies
This decadent green and gold dessert is another wedding and Christmas lunch favourite. Landi's twist on the traditional dessert makes it tastier. Blondies smothered in caramel mousse, topped with peppermint crisp chocolate, what more can you ask for?!
