Ten ways to help you save water in your home
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Today marks World Water Day. Here is how you can play your part in preserving this precious commodity.
Leonardo Da Vinci once said that water is the driving force of all nature.
Humans, animals, and plants need water to survive.
Sadly, according to UNICEF, four billion people — almost two thirds of the world's population — experience severe water scarcity for at least one month each year.
It also adds that half of the world’s population could be living in areas facing water scarcity by as early as 2025.
The Department of Water and Sanitation has asked South Africans to use water sparingly.

Here is how you can save water:
- Use the shower instead of the bath and when soaping up in the shower, turn off the water. Also, while waiting to get the right temperature for the water, use a bucket so the cold water doesn't go to waste.
- Don't leave the water running while brushing your teeth.
- Use the washing machine fully loaded, not half full, to save water.
- For handwashing your clothes, don't fill the tub, and do not rinse more than once.
- When washing dishes, don't fill the sink, but pour enough water to enable you to wash the dishes and refrain from rinsing dishes with running water.
- Water the plants with a watering can.
- Reuse rain water to water your garden, wash your car or even do laundry.
- Fix all leaks in your house.
- When pouring water into a glass to drink, only pour as much as you will be able to drink.
- Use a bucket and sponge to clean the car instead of a hose pipe.
