Four common gardening mistakes and how to avoid them
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Make sure you are not doing the wrong things when it comes to looking after your garden.
To ensure that you have a flourishing garden, you have to do things right from the beginning.
Failure to plan and do things properly can cause your garden to fail miserably.
We take a look at some of the common mistakes that most gardeners make, to help you avoid making them.
Incorrect planning
Before you start your garden, it is important to plan. You need to know how much to grow, where to grow, and what to grow. It is also important to take note of the seasons. Certain plants can only grow during a specific season of the year. So before planting, make sure you know if it is the right season for the kinds of plants you are growing and don’t forget to prepare the correct garden soil.
Overcrowding
Overcrowding is one of the most common mistakes gardeners tend to make. Ensure that your plants are spaced correctly to avoid their root systems from competing for water and nutrients from the soil. Having too many plants planted close to each other can result in disappointing harvest, as some may end up dying.
Watering your plants incorrectly
Although plants can’t survive without water, giving them too much water can kill them. Different plants have different needs depending on the time of year, amount of light, and temperature. Study your plants and know how much each needs to avoid irrational irrigation.
Improper fertilisation
Without proper fertilisation, plants will be deprived of supplements essential for optimal health, growth, and bloom production. But also, using the wrong fertilisers or over-fertilising can kill your plants. So be sure to get the best fertiliser for your crops and follow the instructions on how and when to use it.
