Homemade non-toxic playdough for kids
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Why buy playdough when you can make your
own?!
Children love playdough. Not only does it come in different colours, but it can also be molded into just about every shape under the sun.
Yes, you are likely to be picking up tiny bits of playdough from under the sofa or carpet for days, but your little one will have bucket loads of fun.
The downside to playdough is that some store-bought products are made with chemicals and toxins that you don't really want your child to be playing with.
But there's not need to stress, because you can make your very own playdough with a few ingredients from your kitchen!
Here's what you will need:
Ingredients
1 cup plain flour (use a mixture of rice and corn flour for children with gluten allergies)
1/2 cup salt
1 cup hot water
2 Tbsp cream of tartar
1 1/2 Tbsp vegetable oil
Natural food colouring
A few drops of essential oils (optional)
Method
1. Combine flour, salt and cream of tartar in a pan.
2. Add water, oil and food colouring (some people prefer to add the colouring during the kneading process to make different colours)
3. Stir on medium-low heat until the mixture becomes a dough consistency
4. Once you are satisfied with the dough's consistency take the pan off the stove.
5. Allow to cool for four minutes
Optional: Knead the essential oils (fruit scents work best) of your choice with the dough. If you did not add food colouring to your dough during the cooking process, you can now separate your dough and add the food colourings of your choice.
And finally, store your dough in an air-tight container.
Let the fun begin! Once your kids are done playing, you can store the dough in the fridge to make it last longer.
Here's a video with a step-by-step guide on how to make playdough with no cooking required.
