How to Create Your Own Private, Calming Space
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Now is the time to look after yourself. Here's how...
The hustle and bustle of everyday life can leave you feeling worn out and in desperate need of a vacation.
But taking a holiday to relax your mind, body, and soul is not always possible, so why not create a calming space in your own home?
Here are a few tips to get you started:
Designate a spot
Select a section of your home where you can enjoy peace and quiet. It does not have to be a big area or an entire room. If you do not have any extra space in your house, your bedroom is your best option. Select a corner of the room where there is no clutter or any other distractions that might cause you to lose focus. But the most important thing is that you are able to enjoy peace and quiet.
Decorate your space
Make your private space somewhere you want to go to at the end of a long day. Add a chair with a foot rest and a throw rug (for those cold nights) to your space. You can even add a small night stand and lamp so you can keep inspiring books nearby to read at night. If you want a more Zen space, a rug and cushions to sit on could be sufficient. Add flowers for a touch of colour, and a music player/iPod for music that will help create a calm state of mind. Add scents you like for some aromatherapy. Scents like lavender and chamomile are good for relaxation. Candles can set the mood and also come in different aromas.
Relax, reflect, and nap
Taking a moment out of your busy life can help you re-focus on your goals. Think about all the things you want for your life and family and what you need to do to accomplish those goals. You can even keep your vision board in your calming space as a visual reminder of all the things you want to do. Keep a notepad nearby to write down your thoughts and reflect on the highs and lows of your day. On some days you will just want to clear your mind and simply relax, on others you just need to take time for a nap.
Do not disturb
Don’t be afraid to put a “do not disturb” sign outside your door to let everyone know that you should not be bothered. You can even ask family members to turn down the TV volume or refrain from playing loud music in their bedroom for a certain period. It is not too much to ask?
Make it a daily ritual to spend time in your calming space. Your sanity will thank you.
