Protecting your car from hailstorm damage
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Here are simple and effective ways to protect your car from hail damage.
A car is one of the most expensive assets people have.
Unfortunately, hail can cause huge damage to cars, and repairing the hail damage can cost an arm and a leg, which is why it is better to minimise the damage of the hail as much as possible.
On Monday, scores of Gauteng residents took to social media to share images of the damage the hailstorm that occurred during the evening caused to their cars.
One of the videos that went viral on social media was shared by a Twitter user named Mrs Mabs. She showed a video of her Audi's damaged windscreen.
Another video that went viral was shared on TikTok by user The Car Scene. It shows a red Ferrari that was badly damaged by the hail.

@thecarscene_ Ferrari down bad 😪🧊. I hope you’re all okay after that freak storm tonight! Roads are an absolute mess. If your car was unfortunately damaged today I can safely recommend @Sanrose Autobody to get back in top condition! 🙌 #midrandhail #hailstorm #ferrari #haildamage #hail #storm #johannesburgstorm #jhbstorm #midrandstorm #midrand #ferrari458italia #458italia ♬ Otra Vez - ProdMarvin
If you don't have a garage to park your car, there are several things you can do to minimise the damage that hail can cause to your car.
Firstly, if the hail starts when you are driving, finding the nearest cover for your car is important. This can mean driving to a garage or a mall, or a secure place that will offer your car shelter from the storm.
The best way to protect your car against hail is to get a hail protector which is a waterproof car cover that comes with extra padding. This will ensure your vehicle will not be carrying scratches, dents, or paint damage after the hailstorm.
Another way to protect your car against hail damage is to cover your windows and sunroof with household items such as floor mats, cardboard, duvets, or blankets, however, these items will only help if the hail is not severe.
