Sony forbids AI firms from using unauthorised music
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Sony Music has reportedly sent letters to more than 700 firms after it said it has "reason to believe" that they "may already have made unauthorised uses" of music from its artists.
Artificial intelligence is taking over the world.
According to several media publications, AI is now being used to make music using other artist's voices.
Sony, the record label that represents artists like Beyonce and Adele, has issued communication to try and stop the unauthorised use of its clients' music.
BBC reports that Sony has 'sent letters to Google, Microsoft and OpenAI demanding to know if they have used its songs to develop artificial intelligence (AI) systems'.

Sony sent the letter to more than 700 firms.
The publication also reports that the letters from Sony ask for the following:
- Details of songs it owns that were used to train AI systems
- How the songs were accessed - e.g. through online streaming services
- The number of copies made of the songs, whether the copies still exist, and how long they existed for
- Why it was necessary for such copies to exist for the amount of time they did - assuming they existed in the first place.

AI is currently being used to create music.
In 2023, The Beatles released a new song featuring the voice of late star John Lennon using AI.
In April, artists such as Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Jon Bon Jovi, and the Jonas Brothers signed an open letter from the Artist Rights Alliance that prevents the inappropriate use of AI that undermines the work of artists.
The open letter from Artist Rights Alliance movement reads:
“We call on all AI developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to pledge that they will not develop or deploy AI music-generation technology, content or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work.
“Make no mistake: we believe that, when used responsibly, AI has enormous potential to advance human creativity and in a manner that enables the development and growth of new and exciting experiences for music fans everywhere.
“This assault on human creativity must be stopped.
“We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses, violate creator’s rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.”
