Mental health charity praises Chappell Roan's big donation

The singer has put her money where her mouth is, making a generous financial contribution to a charity dedicated to raising mental health awareness.
'Good Luck, Babe!' singer Chappell Roan's donation to a charity organisation has had a ripple effect, resulting in further contributions.
The singer donated $25,000 (R462,427) to Backline, an American organisation that provides "mental health and wellness resources for music industry professionals and their charities".
The 26-year-old donated after an emotional speech at the 2025 Grammys earlier this month.
"Sharing my personal experience at the Grammys wasn’t meant to be a crowdfunded bandaid but a call to action to the leaders of the industry to step up, help us make a real change and protect their investments in a sustainable way,” she said on Instagram Stories shortly after the ceremony.
While accepting her award for best new artist, Roan opened up about how her record label dropped her during the pandemic, forcing her to move back home and start her music career from scratch.
"I told myself if I ever won a Grammy, and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry, profiting millions of dollars off of artists, would offer a livable wage and health care, especially to developing artists,” she said during the speech.
The 'Pink Pony Club' singer received backlash from some in the industry, with one music executive calling her speech misguided.
"It seems Chappell Roan wants to turn labels into landlords, bosses and insurance providers? Have you ever tried to get your expenses reimbursed from a major label? Yet somehow you want them in charge of health-care claims?" Jeff Rabhan wrote in a piece for The Hollywood Reporter.
However, Roan does not regret her speech.
"This is one of many opportunities for the industry powers to show up for artists. There is much more work to be done," she wrote on Instagram.
Roan urged other artists to support Backline's 'We Got You' campaign by matching her donation. The organisation revealed this week that Lauv and Sabrina Carpenter have joined Charli XCX, Noah Kahan and several big touring companies and promoters in making contributions.
Backline is thankful for Roan's efforts to spotlight an important cause. Speaking to the BBC, director Hilary Gleason says they "really appreciate" the star's call for change in the music industry.
"This is a movement and it's gonna take every single person in the industry calling for this."
