CNN reports that the mayor of Amiens, northern France, Brigitte Fouré, has asked Madonna to lend the city a 19th-century painting lost during World War I.

According to the publication, the mayor believes that Madonna bought the painting after it was lost after Germany bombed the city in 1918.

It is the 'Diana and Endymion' painting by Jérôme-Martin Langlois. It is a painting depicting the Roman goddess Diana, one of the twelve Gods and Goddesses of Olympus, falling in love with Endymion. According to several publications, Endymion was a handsome shepherd-prince or king who was said to rule and live at Olympia in Elis.

The City reportedly needs the painting to help its chances of becoming the European Capital of Culture.

It was once on display in an Amiens museum.

Madonna reportedly bought the painting in New York in 1989 for $1.3-million.
