2014 GRAMMY Nominees CD
Updated | By Charis Apelgren
Quick facts… The Grammy Awards have come and gone and a few surprises aside, a lot of the awards went to the favourites in the main categories. The annual Grammy Nominees CD was released just in time for the awards evening itself and features 18 tracks across a selection of the categories. Daft Punk, Robin Thicke, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and P!nk featuring Nate Ruess turned out some of 2013’s biggest hits and were justly rewarded when they all got nominated. Interestingly, 5 songs nominated in the Country categories are included with songs by Taylor Swift and Tim McGraw flying the flag for the genre. But in the end, the night belonged to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Daft Punk, both artists winning a handful of awards, and Lorde who became the third youngest Grammy winner in history.
Best tracks… Royals – Lorde, Same Love – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Radioactive – Imagine Dragons, Lego House – Ed Sheeran.
What others have to say… Commenting about the Top selling albums after the awards evening: “A full seven out of the top 10 albums are directly impacted by the Grammy Awards. After the "2014 Grammy Nominees" album at No. 2, the titles at Nos. 3, 5 and 7-10 all bask in the glow of Grammy. In the top 40 of the chart, there are 13 albums that see Grammy-related gains. Last week, some industry forecasters suggested that the "Grammy" album had a shot at hitting No. 1 -- and thus marking the first No. 1 in the long-running series' history. However, the sales of the "Grammy" set started to slow as last weekend approached -- and as we got farther away from the Awards ceremony itself.” www.billboard.com
What we have to say… Good to see the strongest artists and tracks represented on the song list of the CD. Although it would’ve been nice to see nominated artists like David Bowie, Kings of Leon and Vampire Weekend also included. Still, a good representation of what the Grammy Awards stand for in recognising the best music from the previous couple of months.
It makes us wanna… “…look for previous years’ Grammy CDs and relive the moment.”
In their own words… "Yeah, this time the weirdo won out." – Lorde.
