EFF says it will not initiate coalition talks

With coalition governments most likely to govern in the country's economic metros, the EFF is now being seen as the key party that can open local government doors for wither the ANC or the DA.

Numbers are neck-and-neck in Johannesburg and Tshwane, with both the DA and the ANC nowhere near the required 51 percent majority to govern on their own.

In Nelson Mandela Bay, the DA won with 46.71 percent, where they will also need to form a coalition.

EFF leader Julius Malema addressed the media at the IEC's National Results Operation Centre in the west of Pretoria and said they have not been approached by any parties yet.

"We cannot close our ears when we are spoken to by anyone. We want a government which is a blesser to the poor," he said

Despite the EFF's earlier comments that they would not form a coalition with the ANC, he said he could not guarantee that he would not hear what the ruling party had to say.

"It would be very childish to refuse to talk to people...we are not prepared to get into a coalition with the ANC, but it does not mean you cannot talk to them. We are mature like that. We must listen to each other."
