Special report from Vuwani
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
Police are confident voting in the troubled area of Vuwani, Limpopo will run smoothly.
This is according to Acting National Police Commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane, who addressed media today during an intelligence and security state of readiness briefing at the Vuwani police station.
The heightened police presence in the area comes after at least 20 schools were torched earlier this year during protests relating to municipal demarcations.
Phahlane says there will be more than 1000 officers in the area over the next few days, to ensure voting runs smoothly.
14 voting stations will be open in the area for special votes tomorrow, while on Wednesday there will be a total 56 voting booths. All of these will be patrolled.
He is confident they have enough boots on the ground to ensure everyone's safety.
"We have taken control of the streets of Vuwani. We have deployed accordingly and that is what we said we were going to do to make sure there is deployment so that the people of Vuwani are guaranteed that they are safe and secure," Phahlane said.
