Ekurhuleni Metro warns of flash floods in Gauteng
Updated | By ANA
Heavy rains were expected to start falling around Gauteng from overnight on Tuesday and could cause flash floods, the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department said.
“Localised flooding is anticipated in different areas around the province. As heavy rain is anticipated, rivers, canals and streams might experience high volume of water which might result in flash floods,” said spokesman William Ntladi.
Ntladi said disaster management staff would be placed on “high alert”, especially as the weather conditions could affect learners who would return to school on Wednesday.
“Many children or scholars might be found wandering and be subjected to drowning as some are crossing rivers and streams on the way to their respective learning facilities.”
Ntladi urged residents to ensure they avoided crossing swollen water streams, canals and flooded rivers.
Parents were also asked to encourage their children to stay away from flooded areas.
Ntladi said motorists should avoid flooded subways, and if their vehicles became trapped by water, they should abandon it and “climb to higher ground”.
“Never drive over the bridge covered by flooding water. You do not know how deep it is or if the road has been washed away,” he added.
