Experts record 4.1 magnitude tremor in Durban
The Council for Geoscience has released the final figures for the tremor that was felt in many parts of KwaZulu Natal Thursday night.
The 4.1 magnitude tremor originated near the Matatiele-Lesotho border, but the seismic event was also felt in Durban's surrounding areas - Pietermaritzburg and Kokstad.
The council's Michelle Grobbelaar says it's unclear exactly how far the tremor went.
"Anything above a 3.5 magnitude - if you are right next to the earthquake, can start causing damage. Not severe damage, but it can start causing damage to buildings - for instance, little minor things like things could fall-off a shelf; that's when you start noticing any effects on your buildings."
It's the second time this year that Durban has felt the earth move. In February, people across Durban and in some parts of Pietermaritzburg experiejced a similar tremor.
