TIMELINE: Four days to a new KZN Premier

Jacaranda FM News reporter, Samkelo Maseko takes a look at the timeline leading up to the nomination of Willies Mchunu as the premier-elect.

Friday 20 May - Renewed speculation that KZN premier Senzo Mchunu will step down. What followed was a lot of "no comments" and "we cannot confirm or deny". A statement released by the premier's office on the day stated: " Our standing policy as the Office of the Premier is that we don't comment on matters of deployment. "


Saturday 21  May - The party remains mum on reports of Mchunu stepping down. Senzo Mchunu does not attend the Worker's parliament in Port Shepstone.


Sunday 22  May - Senzo Mchunu does not attend the National prayer day in Durban. The provinces Transport MEC Willies Mchunu represents him. Willies Mchunu also calls reports on Senzo Mchunu leaving office "rumours" and dismissed claims of a cabinet reshuffle. 


Monday 23 May - The IFP in KZN urges the ANC to not reshuffle the cabinet to settle political scores, but to improve service delivery. ANC head of campaings Nomvula Mokonyane says they are worried about violence in the province. Premier Senzo Mchunu reports for work as usual. Later in the day he grants media interviews confirming that he has stepped down but expresses concern over the way the matter was handled. The ANC in the province accepts Mchunu's resignation and nominates Willies Mchunu to take over the reigns. The ANC Youth League in KZN says Mchunu's resignation is in the best interest of the party
