Two burn to death after their bakkie crashes
Updated | By ANA
Two people were killed in the early hours of Tuesday morning in a tragic car crash in which their bakkie caught alight.
The pair were burned to death along the R34, outside of Newcastle in KwaZulu Natal.
ER24 Spokesperson, Russel Meiring, said when paramedics and provincial Fire Services personnel arrived at the crash scene they found a bakkie lying on its roof at the side of the road.
"The bakkie had caught alight and had rapidly been consumed by the flames," said Meiring.
Firefighters battled the blaze. After the fire was extinguished paramedics were able to approach the vehicle.
"Two lifeless bodies were found lying trapped inside the vehicle. Unfortunately, due to the extensive burn wounds, both occupants could not be identified and were declared dead on the scene," said Meiring.
"It is understood that the vehicle had been traveling from Memel towards Newcastle when the incident occurred."
Local authorities, as well as the accident investigations unit were investigating the cause of the crash.
