VIDEO: Houses set alight in Modimolle protest
Several buildings were set alight during violent protests in Phagameng near Modimolle in Limpopo.
Disgruntled residents were calling for access to water, saying they have been without it for weeks.
According to the police's Ronel Otto, a satellite building belonging to the municipality as well as the houses of three police officials were set alight.
"No reports of injuries were received. The situation inside Phagameng is still very tense and volatile and police are regularly firing rubber bullets or tear gas to disperse the crowds," Otto said.
More police have been deployed in the area on Tuesday after protest action flared up overnight.
The mayor's house was damaged in the protest action.
Hundreds of residents who have taken to the streets are in a stand-off with members of the public order police. Several residents have been arrested.
Community leader Zola Zabantu said they have handed over a memorandum to Mayor Kgaretja Elizabeth Lekalakala and she failed to address them.
"The request was [for] water and the [water] bills must start at R0. There were trucks that brought water...they said they must stop those trucks, because the water was dirty. They must listen to the people. They don't listen," Zabantu said.
