VIDEO: Students vow to shut down Wits
Students gathered at the University of the Witwatersrand early on Tuesday morning.
The #FeesMustFall protest was reignited following an announcement by the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande's that universities must determine their own fee increases.
Minister Nzimande yesterday briefed students and the media, saying the fee increments would however be capped at 8 %.
There was several concessions made to NSFAS students, as well as those belonging to the so-called "missing middle", with government saying it would absorb any fee increases affecting those students.
Students immediately took to the streets to show their dissatisfaction at Nzimande's announcement, saying they simply can't afford a fee increase.
Police were out in full force in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday as students started gathering.
Meanwhile student leaders at UKZN and Mangosuthu University of Technology say they will mobilise students for more protests following the Higher Education Minister's recommendation for fees to be hiked.
The UKZN's Sphelele Nguse says they rejects the recommendation.
The MUT's Ronnie Madlala says there can't be recommendations while the commission appointed by President Jacob Zuma hasn't pronounced on free education.
