Super Rugby Stats : Week 2 in numbers

A lot of emphasis has been placed on South African teams playing a more expansive style and judged by the attacking stats on the App the tide is turning in that department.

The Cell C Sharks claimed a nail-biting 19-15 victory over Argentina’s Jaguares while the DHL Stormers outsmarted the Toyota Cheetahs on their home ground in Bloemfontein.

Bjorn Basson spearheaded the Vodacom Bulls’ charge in their 45-25 victory over the visiting Rebels with a hat-trick of tries.

Lions speedster Ruan Combrinck could earn higher honours if he can maintain the superb form from the last two seasons.

Combrinck was instrumental in their victory over the Chiefs topping the Defenders Beaten category where he managed to get the best of nine defenders.

The Bulls’ Burger Odendaal also cracked it into the top five of this category sharing second place with Charlie Ngatai (Chiefs), and Nemani Nadolo (Crusaders) beating seven defenders each.

 

South African players completely dominated the Metres Run bracket with Bulls fullback Warrick Gelant leading the pack with the 136 metres he made over the weekend.

 

He is followed by Combrinck (122m), Basson (109m), Travis Ismaiel (107m) and the Reds’ Eto Nabuli with the 99m he covered.

 

Combrinck and Basson topped the Clean Breaks statistics with the Brumbies’ Joseph Tomane with four apiece while Sharks veteran Odwan Ndungane and Leolon Zas of the Stormers also got into the top five with three each.

 

Gelant shares second place of the Carries category with Stormers stalwart Schalk Burger taking the ball up 14 times in their respective games while Tevita Kuridrani topped the stats with 16 with Bulls lock Grant Hattingh also getting in on the action with 13.

 

Stormers second row Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit are emerging as the best lock combination making life hard on the Cheetahs stealing three balls on the hosts’ throw.

 

Cheetahs lock Lood de Jager was equally effective for his side pinching two from the Stormers while Lions skipper Warren Whiteley did the same against the Chiefs.
