IEC chief electoral officer Mosotho Moepya briefed the media at the national results operations centre on Tuesday.

He said the special voting process will conclude at 17:00 on Tuesday as scheduled.

"Some voting stations had already closed yesterday after all approved special votes had already been cast."

Moepya said special voting has provided the commission with an opportunity to fine tune its operations ahead of Election Day.

"It has provided us with an opportunity to deal with any process and logistical issues."

The IEC said it encountered several challenges on day one of special voting including three reported cases of voters who had not applied to cast a special vote, but were granted permission to vote.

"Affected ballots have been quarantined and the Commission will after consultation with the National Political Party Liaison Committee, determine the way forward," Moepya explained.

Presiding officers gave been issued with warnings where procedures were not followed.

"In two cases the officials were summarily dismissed for allowing voters who had not been granted special votes to vote and for failing to secure ballot boxes," Moepya said.

He also said Vuwani is not a key concern for the IEC.

Voting stations in Vuwani were closed on Monday due to low registration numbers.

Only 32 people had applied for special votes in the area.
