Celebrities pay tribute to veteran actress Connie Chiume

Celebrities have shared their heartfelt condolences following the passing of veteran actress Connie Chiume.

Several celebrities have taken to social media to mourn the passing of legendary actor Connie Chiume. 

Connie, who rose to prominence as an actress in 1989, has put South Africa on the international map. She appeared in the film 'Black Panther' in 2018 and 2022. She also appeared in Beyoncé’s Disney musical film, 'The Lion King', where she played Simba’s mother, Sarabi. 

Locally, she featured in several productions, including 'Gomora' and 'Rhythm City'. 

Twitter, now known as X, has also been flooded with messages of condolence from Connie's fans following the news of her passing. 

Connie passed away on Tuesday at the age of 72. She reportedly died at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg. 

Since the announcement of her passing, several celebrities and politicians expressed their shock and heartbreak. 

Talk show host Felicia Mabuza-Suttle was one of the very first celebrities to express her sadness over Connie's passing. She shared a short clip of Connie appearing on her show years ago.

"Sad to learn about the passing of an icon & legend #ConnieChiume. Brought back these words she said on the #FeliciaShow. She said, "I didn't come here for glamour or money. I believe in this thing called, 'a calling.' God has called me to be where I am." Profound. RIP Diva!," she wrote on IG. 

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi also took to X to send his condolences.

"Go well Mama, it hurts but you played your role. Immensely proud of your accomplishments #RIPConnieChiume," wrote Panyaza Lesufi.

South African actress Zenande Mfenyana wrote about Connie's contribution to the entertainment industry. 

"You have left an indelible mark in our hearts, we will forever love you and thank you for the incredible contribution you made in the industry. Lala Ngoxolo Mama," she wrote on X. 

Another veteran actor, Sello Maake kaNcube, wrote about how he would miss Connie. 

"I still can’t believe you took your last sleep and checked out so soon. Your soul will be missed by many of us! Till we meet again!"

Thuli Madonsela said Connie's death is a loss to the nation. 

The South African government also thanked Chiume for the work she has done in the industry. 

"Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered".  

The family confirmed the news of Connie's passing on her official Instagram page.

"The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the International Acclaimed award winning actress Connie Chiume.

"The family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details."
