Color Purple SA announces casting

Executive Producer Bernard Jay is proud to announce initial casting for South Africa's original production of the musical The Color Purple.

The show will be presented by The South African State Theatre and Bernard Jay, giving its first preview performance in the Opera Theatre of the Pretoria State Theatre on June 27th 2017.


"We are all thrilled that recent auditions of over 250 artists held in Cape Town and Pretoria have resulted in the confirmed casting of sixteen of the twenty actors required for the production," says Jay.  


"The casting of the pivotal lead female roles of Celie and Shug Avery is in an ongoing workshop process with the production's director, Janice Honeyman, and will be announced shortly."

Contracted to-date for the all-South African cast are - in alphabetical order - Cindy-Ann Abrahams, Molebatsi Lekgetha, Sebe Leotlela (as Nettie), Andile Magxaki, Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri (as Harpo), Venolia Manale, Namisa Mdlalose, Phumi Mncayi, Neo Motaung (as Sofia), Thokozani Nzima, Funeka Peppeta, Aubrey Poo (as Mister), Senzesihle Radebe, Zolani Shangase, Ayanda Sibisi and Lebo Toko.


The Color Purple is based upon the 1982 novel written by Alice Walker and the 1985 Warner Bros/Amblin Entertainment Motion Picture, directed by Steven Spielberg.
