Here’s the winner of the SARIE Nuwe Gesig
A matric pupil from Cape Town is the winner of the SARIE Nuwe Gesig competition - and she graces the cover of a smaller version of the magazine!
A Cape Town matric pupil was announced by her school as the first winner of SARIE’s Nuwe Gesig (New Face) competition. And, as an extra surprise, she appears on the cover of a smaller version of the magazine’s September issue!
This is the 10th year of SARIE’s well-known and popular competition where readers pick a South African woman for their cover. This year’s competition added an extra category for a new face, the SARIE Nuwe Gesig competition, giving high school students from grade 10 to 12 (16 to 18 years old) the chance to be part of the now decades-old search for a cover face that’s not a celebrity or someone well known.
SARIE Nuwe Gesig kicked off in this year of home schooling and staying indoors that provided the perfect background for a contest based on creativity and courage. Learners had to send three entry photos and they had to work some magic online. When the entries opened on 17 April, #SARIEnuwegesig took off on social media platforms – and since then, people have not stopped sharing.
From 17 April to 31 May 2020 (the competition period), the SARIE Cover Page website (voorbladgesig.sarie.com) attracted a total of 1 026 883 page views and 238 250 users, and 32.13% of the website traffic came from Instagram.

Announcement of the finalists
On 1 July, SARIE announced the Nuwe Gesig Top 30. These finalists are a combination of social media stars and exciting new faces.
The Top 10 was announced in the August SARIE, the Women’s Month issue with Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi on the cover.
From Friday 21 August, the September issue of SARIE will be available on store shelves. It will be available in two sizes: the size that everyone knows and a ‘handbag’ SARIE. Our very first winner of SARIE Nuwe Gesig will appear on the cover of this smaller version!
Readers will also be able to choose from four scarf designs, each with SARIE’s wake-up call for 2020, #JyIsGenoeg (#YouAreEnough).
And the winner is…
Jonadrie van Aardt, a matric learner at Jan van Riebeeck High School, is the first SARIE Nuwe Gesig.
