Shakira has been involved in a legal battle in Spain for tax evasion.

In a recent development, the Guardian reported that the singer's Spanish investigation over her alleged tax evasion was dropped.

This is after it was found that there was not enough evidence presented to “constitute a [criminal] offence against the tax authorities”, reports the publication.

The investigation found that Shakira had made no “intent to defraud” the Spanish government. This is despite certain “irregularities” in her tax return.

“[This] put an end to the smear campaign waged by the tax authorities…[and] proves there was never any fraudulent behaviour on the part of the singer,” defence attorney Pau Molins said, according to The Guardian.

The attorney says the court findings were well received by the singer.

Molins told the publication that the singer is “completely satisfied that [the court] had acknowledged she had not committed any criminal fraud”.

In November 2023, AFP reported that the Colombian superstar will pay millions of euros in fines as part of a settlement with Spanish prosecutors to settle her tax fraud case and avoid trial.

It stated that Shakira agreed to receive a three-year suspended sentence and to pay 7.3 million euros ($7.98 million) in fines.
