It may have been a first for the awards ceremony to take the format of an online announcement and not a glitzy, physical event due to the COVID-19 crisis, but that didn’t dampen the Jacaranda FM team’s spirits in the least. Even while at home, they all donned their best formal attire for the announcement!

It was a dual accolade for Jacaranda FM’s Breakfast with Martin Bester, who completed an on-air Mandela Day drive called Hearts of Hope in 2019, where R1.8 million was raised during the show for a drive that eventually totalled R2.7 million raised, to give 67 kids life-saving heart operations as part of Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels. This popular feature assisted 60 different communities, causes and individuals with more than R13 million in 2019.

Jacaranda FM Breakfast host, Martin Bester, says: “These awards are all thanks to our listeners. Thank you for listening to us, thank you for being part of our morning family, for crying with us on Good Morning Angels and thank you for being happy with us when we can help someone in need. Thank you for supporting our Good Morning Angels Fund when we ask you to. From all of us – myself and Liesl and Elma, Gerda, Dianne and, of course, the production team that you don’t always see or hear from. Megan Mitchell, our executive producer, Carla Mackenzie who looks after our digital side and Willem van Biljon, our technical producer… just an incredible team – thank you for being part of our mornings and for tuning in. We’ll see you again on Monday morning from our various homes on lockdown. Stay safe, stay healthy and we celebrate these awards, as always, with you, because it’s thanks to you!”

Dianne Broodryk, who plays a pivotal role in driving Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels, says: “I am deeply grateful for the recognition from the SA Radio Awards - because it is an acknowledgement for all the years of giving with no expectation of recognition from the many Angels who have opened their hearts and their wallets to strangers in need - for the sake of love and humanity, espousing the values of Nelson Mandela. Jacaranda FM and all the Angels, through Good Morning Angels, are indeed living the Madiba values by making every day, a Mandela Day.”

“Each member of the Jacaranda FM team is honoured and humbled by these awards. Countless hours of research and tireless work by the team to consistently deliver a world-class product are paying off, motivating us to do even better,” says Jacaranda FM’s Programme Manager, Hennie Myburgh.

“Especially under the unique and challenging circumstances we find ourselves in due to COVID-19, it takes an A-team of people to bring top tunes, breaking news, hot topics, engaging events and community projects together in a recipe that works well. We’ve seen substantial, national growth across on-air, online, social and physical engagement platforms, so these accolades are a major cherry on top!”
