Jada Pinkett Smith shocked the world last week when she revealed that she and Will Smith have been secretly separated since 2016.

In an interview with Today, which came out on Monday, the talk show host now says the two of them are working hard to restore their "life partnership".

"At the end of the day, Will and I really love each other. We had to figure out what we really wanted before we went into the world to say what was going on," she said when talking about what led to the separation.

"We had to go our separate ways to see each other," she told Today’s Hoda Kotb.

Following the revelation she made last week, Will told the New York Times that Jada's memoir “kind of woke him up” and that he has now realised she is more “resilient, clever, and compassionate than he’d understood”.

The award-winning actor added: “When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”

Jada told Today that the two of them are working hard to fix their relationship.

She refused the idea of finding another great love or Will moving on with someone else.

"There is no finding another great love," she said in the interview.  "We are in a place now, we are in a deep healing space. We are really concentrating on healing the relationship between us."

"There is no divorce on paper," and she said there will be no divorce in theory.

The mother of two also spoke about some of the misconceptions she had when she got married.

"We are working very hard at bringing our relationship, yes, bringing our relationship back together... back to a life partnership because here is the thing about husband-wife marriage for me, for my healing process. I came into that with very specific ideas, right? Very specific ideas that were blocks to me just seeing Will to who he is. He can't be this perfect idealised husband.

"I have to be able to accept him for the human he is. He accepts me for the human that I am, and we want to love each other there."

She said the two of them might live in the same house again.

In a separate interview with The Sunday Times magazine, Jada revealed that when they separated in 2016, the aim was to divorce, but it just never felt right.

"When we had that separation in 2016 the goal was to divorce, but divorce just didn't feel right for either of us. We don't know why. But here we are.

"To be honest with you, I think eventually we will (live together again) I really do. Will's getting old. I'm staying quite young, but it's getting apparent to me that he's gonna need someone to take care of him."

Jada's book, 'Worthy', comes out on Tuesday, 17 October. It not only goes into detail about her relationship with Will, but also the time she felt suicidal.
