"A Lucky Man" is a new film based on the real life story of legendary former South African gangster Ernie "Lastig" Solomon.

The film opens in cinemas in April 2013 and charts Solomon's violent rise from childhood in the slums of Cape Town to one of the country's most infamous gangland criminals.

"The film explores issues of identity and ethics in the life of a man who is forced to live on the edge of society," says the film's producer Mark Fyfe.

"Ernie was born into a family that branded him a nuisance (lastig) and saw him as an outsider. On top of that, he grew up in a city and country in which he was a member of a community deemed neither white nor black."

"His life becomes one of crime, violence and abuse as he searches for himself and a place he can call home. It.s a universal human tale about the longing to belong."

Set in the impoverished Cape Flats, a peri-urban sprawl on the periphery of one of the world's most beautiful cities, Cape Town, "A Lucky Man" traces Ernie.s quest as he collides with both family and society.
