WATCH: 7 de Laan cast on “the gay kiss”
Cast members of the popular TV soap, Nobuhle "Mimi" Mahlasela and Hildegardt Whites, say it was time to break boundaries.
The two spoke to JacarandaFM News while attending the South African Film and Televvison Awards in Sun City last night.
This follows the now infamous gay kiss showed on the soap a few weeks ago as the cast celebrated the soapie's 4000th episode.
"We showcase people in their daily lives and gay people are very much a part of society in South Africa and it is high time that our viewers realise it," Nobuhle Mahlasela aka Aggie told JacarandaFM news.
Hildegardt Whites, who plays the role of Bonita in 7 de Laan says it was time- and although viewers are very conservative, they had to bring in the storyline sooner or later.
Mahlasela says they have broken a boundary as a production.
"It is normal and it is about time that it is seen on television - and it should be celebrated," she says.
The gay kiss had social media abuzz with many saying it wasn't neccesary for the soap to follow a gay storyline, but Hildegardt disagrees.
"We did not expect the backlash that it got but we knew what was going to happen and I guess you handle it," she says.
Both actresses are adament that times have changed and that they have a social responsibility to educate their audience.
