Thirty-five years since Mandela walked out of prison
Tuesday marks 35 years since the release of former president Nelson Mandela after 27 years behind bars.
Mandela walked out of the Victor Verster Prison in the Western Cape on the 11th of February 1990, marking a historic point in the downfall of the apartheid regime.
Following his release from a 27-year prison sentence, Nelson Mandela addressed a large crowd of supporters at a rally in Cape Town.
In a video, a young Cyril Ramaphosa can be seen standing next to Mandela and holding a microphone for him to speak.
Thirty-five years later, Ramaphosa delivered the State of the Nation Address last week in the same City Hall.
Delivering his first speech after his release, Madiba expressed his gratitude to South Africans during his journey.
"Dear friends, comrades and fellow South Africans, I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all. I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands on this day of my release.
"I extend my sincere and warmest gratitude to the millions of my companions and those in every corner of the globe who have campaigned tirelessly for my release.
"Your mass marches, and other forms of struggle have served as a constant source of strength to all political prisoners, I salute the African National Congress, it has fulfilled our every expectation in its role as leader of the great match to freedom."
