"One man had sustained moderate injuries, while ten others had sustained minor injuries," says Meiring.

Meiring says the patients were transferred to a nearby medical centre for further treatment.

"The details surrounding the explosion are not yet known, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations."

Head of Media Relations at Sasol Limited, Alex Anderson says the fire has been extinguished.

"The priority now is to ensure that everyone continues to be safe and to reassure the community around the operation that the incident has been brought under control and there is no immediate threat to their safety," says Anderson.

Anderson says an investigation into the explosion will start once the area is safe to enter.

"Our Process Engineers will begin the process of establishing the impact and the work that needs to be done to correct that."
