“Fourteen road users died on the province’s roads this weekend,” said the department’s spokesman Byron la Hoe.

Most of the deaths were reported in the Greater Cape Metropole with road fatalities in Lentegeur, Table View, Kraaifontein, Du Noon, Strand, Macassar, and Heideveld.

Reporting on the results of the province’s weekend traffic operations, La Hoe said a total of 2,366 vehicles were stopped in 22 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape.

Of these, just over 1,400 drivers were tested for being under the influence of alcohol, resulting in 23 arrests.

“The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Vredenburg. At 1.02mg [milligrams]/1 000ml [millilitres], this is four times the legal limit of 0,24mg/1 000ml,” said La Hoe.

Traffic services also screened a total of 756 vehicles for speeding. 116 speeding offences were recorded and a total of 201 fines to the amount of R268,300 were issued for various traffic violations.

La Hoe said the highest speed recorded over the weekend was 174 kilometres per hour (km/h) in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort-West service area.
