Sibanye-Stillwater has warned that some 6 000 workers may lose their jobs due to retrenchments at the mining company.
The affected shafts are Beatrix and Driefontein.
The mining company says over the next two months it will consult to try and find ways to minimise any potential job losses.
The firm, which has both gold and platinum mines in South Africa, employs over 61,000 people in its local operations
Beatrix and Driefontein have been suffering financial losses over the past couple of years.
The company’s James Wellsted says it has been locked in talks with unions since last year about job losses and the reformation of companies.
However, the talks were not able to reach any solutions.
“A lot more jobs will be at risk if we do not address these issues," says Wellsted.
Meanwhile, Mineral Resources spokesperson Nathi Shabangu says department will work to try and ensure as many jobs as possible are saved during the restructuring.
