8 years behind bars for corrupt former Hawks boss

The former deputy head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal was sentenced to an effective 8 years behind bars by the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.
Simon Madonsela was convicted of two counts of corruption amounting to R28 000.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA spokesperson in KZN Natasha Kara says the matter relates to a missing persons case investigated by Madonsela’s unit.
After the docket was closed Madonsela approached the missing woman’s family demanding up to R40 000 to keep investigations going.
“He also told them that the matter was receiving his ongoing attention, although the docket was already closed,” says Kara.
“The family could not pay the requested amount but gave him R25 000. He later requested a further R3 000, which the family paid as well.
“They eventually got frustrated as the matter was not proceeding and laid a charge against him.”
Madonsela was granted leave to appeal his conviction.
The matter will be heard on Friday.
