Two people died and five were injured in a head-on crash between a car and a minibus on the R71 between Phalaborwa and Namakgale.

Spokesperson Mike Maringa says the couple in the car are believed to have had argument which led to the crash.

"The female passenger gripped the steering wheel and swerved the vehicle to on-coming traffic. The Polo collided head-on with a kombi that had two occupants. The driver and a female passenger were killed instantly, and three passengers seated at the back of the same sedan escaped with serious injuries.”

Maringa says the minibus taxi caught fire, but the driver and the passenger managed to escape and said to be in a critical condition.

"This brings to nine the number of people who have died on the provincial roads since Friday afternoon. Two pedestrians are amongst those killed while crossing the roads at Giyani and Silom respectively."

Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya says the increase in the number of fatal crashes is a concern.

“We have made a plea to road users to drive with caution, but we are seeing an increase of weekend fatalities, the number has increased from eight fatalities recorded last weekend to nine.

“Reckless and negligent driving is a common factor in most of these accidents and our road users need to be cautious and think about the consequences of their actions.’
