“Encouragingly, the N1 corridor, long regarded as one of the country’s most hazardous routes, recorded no major crashes during this time. This marks a promising step forward in the ongoing national effort to enhance road safety,”  said AA spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela.

Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy, confirmed during a media briefing on Monday that traffic peaked at 2,047 vehicles per hour through the N1 toll gates on Thursday and Friday afternoon.

Mavimbela said they acknowledged that the final figures were still pending, however, the AA believed that there was already sufficient evidence to commend South African road users for contributing to reduced accidents and fatalities.
