ACDP expects Godongwana to table 'market-friendly' budget

The African Christian Democratic Party has urged Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to table a market-friendly budget speech.

Godongwana will deliver the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on Wednesday.
The minister is expected to announce the government's plans to reduce spending and measures to service debt.
This will be the first budget under the government of national unity, and several ministries have already been warned that funding will be cut.
ACDP Parliamentary Whip Steve Swart said that while cost containment measures are necessary to stabilise the debt, they should not impact service delivery, including crime prevention, health, and education services.
"The ACDP expects a market-friendly (MTBPS), given the positive sentiment that the government of national unity has generated.
"We further expect the minister to continue with fiscal consolidation measures yet announcing further steps to stimulate economic growth.
"The ACDP does not support tax increases, given hard-pressed households and businesses. We believe there are other ways of cutting government expenditure in ways that don’t affect service delivery.
"One way is to reduce administrative costs by amalgamating various departments and ministries.”
