Bongo, who is the chair of the home affairs committee and former state security minister, briefly appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of corruption.

He was granted bail of R5000.

Speaking outside Parliament, Majodina said Bongo also still has a case to answer at the ethics committee.

"Yesterday Bongo was informed by the ethics committee that he will soon have to appear before the committee, we then had to allow the processes of Parliament to start here.”

Majondina added that since she was unaware of Bongo’s imminent arrest, she will now send a report to ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule to inform him of the developments.

Meanwhile, Parliament's spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says they will closely monitor the case and will take into account the applicable rules, legislation and constitutional provisions.

Bongo is expected to appear in the Western Cape High Court at the end of January.
