ANC will respond to DA’s Brink plea next week, says Mbalula

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula has told the Daily Maverick that they will respond next week to an ultimatum from the DA to help vote Cilliers Brink back in as Tshwane mayor.

In a letter to Mbalula and the ANC’s head of coalition strategy, David Makhura, DA Federal Council chairperson Helen Zille called Brink’s ousting seismic for the government of national unity.

She also warned that the return of Brink was non-negotiable.

While the DA wants Brink back, the ANC is considering Kgoši Maepa or George Matjila as mayoral candidates.

Brink was voted out through an ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence last Thursday.

The motion passed after ActionSA announced its decision to ditch the DA-led multiparty coalition and support the ANC.

He said the move to ditch the DA was to avoid being stabbed in the back by their former ally.

Speaking on Newzroom Afrika on Tuesday, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba didn't rule out backing an ANC mayor but said their preference is for the current deputy mayor, Nasiphi Moya, to take over the reins.

“They [the ANC] have got to put someone better than Dr Nasiphi. We’ll look at it.

“But we are not fools. I am not going to engage in negotiations of such a sensitive nature in public.”

Council Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana is expected to convene another council sitting soon to elect a new mayor.
