The Gauteng Education Department said police confirmed the grade 10 pupil, whose lifeless body was discovered on the rugby field at Hӧerskool Garsfontein, died an unnatural death.
MEC Matome Chiloane visited the Pretoria East school on Tuesday after ground staff made the grim discovery at around 8 am.
The department revealed the pupil’s identity as Mia Kühn, whose family was reportedly at the local police station to report her missing when officers received the call about to attend to the disturbing find.
“According to her mother at midnight, she was still at home, and when they went to sleep most probably, she slipped out.
“When they woke up, they couldn’t find her,” the MEC said.

The circumstances around the 16-year-old’s death remain sketchy, but Chiloane said it was concerning that there was no immediate explanation for how anyone managed to access the tightly-secured school.
“They don’t know how she gained entry, but she did, and I really think that's where the police should start.”
He said he hoped footage from the CCTV cameras near the field will assist authorities as they carry out their investigations.
In the meantime, psychosocial services will be availed to teachers, pupils and family members to offer emotional support.
Chiloane said while the department would await the post-mortem results for more details, his only hope was that there was no foul play.
