City Power warns of delayed response to outages

City Power has warned that thunderstorms and possible localised flooding will impact its ability to respond to power outages.
The South African Weather Service issued a warning for possible severe thunderstorms in North West, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.
The weather service said the central interior of the country is likely to experience heavy downpours.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said these conditions will make it difficult for technicians to get to the site and carry out repairs on time.
Mangena says the entity has received over 2000 outage calls across the city, adding that the number is likely to increase during the course of the day.
"Additionally, we also expect the inclement weather to put our network under pressure, as the demand for electricity usually spikes under these circumstances. We, therefore, appeal to customers to assist us in lowering electricity consumption by using it sparingly and always switching off all non-essential appliances.
“This will help in relieving pressure from the system and lower chances of outages that are triggered by overcurrent," said Mangena.
He said measures have been put in place to offset the impact of extreme weather conditions on the system across all the service delivery centres.
"We are, however, relying heavily on responsible electricity consumption from our customers in order to unburden the network and keep lights on. Our teams will continue to attend to outstanding outages in different parts of the city while guarding against post-load shedding trips.”
