High-level meetings between government and health officials are expected to kick-off on Saturday, with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) set to meet behind closed doors.
The Presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will chair this meeting.
Government fears that the new variant, Omicron, could be behind the spike in infections coming from Gauteng and now spreading to the rest of the country
The National Joints structures will also meet this weekend.
South Africans will then have to wait in anticipation for Ramaphosa to address the nation and possibly announce stricter measures and changes to the current Adjusted Level 1 of lockdown.
Meanwhile, Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele has confirmed that Home Affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi has also tested positive for Covid-19.
Motsoaledi is said to be in good health and working from where he is in isolation.
