Correctional Services probing Magudumana assault claim
The Department of Correctional Services is investigating claims by Dr Nandipha Magudumana that she was assaulted in custody.
The alleged incident took place at the Kroonstad correctional centre on Saturday.
Magudumana alleges that she was assaulted by another inmate.
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says healthcare officials conducted an examination on her and found no visible injuries.
"DCS is investigating the circumstances following what was said to be a prayer meeting in a different cell from Magudamana’s. Reports of an alleged altercation and a push against the grills can be confirmed.
"DCS officials advised Magudumana to open a criminal case when she reported that she was allegedly assaulted, but she opted to discuss it with her lawyers first.
“Furthermore, DCS Healthcare officials conducted an examination on her and found no visible injuries. The safety and well-being of inmates is our utmost priority, and we take such allegations seriously. Hence, this incident is under investigation.
Magudumana was arrested in 2023 following convicted rapist Thabo Bester's escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022.
The convicted rapist and killer, who is also known as the Facebook rapist, allegedly staged his own death by placing the body of Katlego Bereng in his cell at the Mangaung prison before setting it alight.
