Cosatu, NUM to picket outside Chamber of Mines
Updated | By Neo Motloung
Congress of South
African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) are
picketing outside the offices of the Chamber of Mines in Johannesburg on
Thursday.
The unions are demonstrating against an increase in the number of fatalities in the sector.
Seven miners died last week following seismic activity at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Masekhane mine on the West Rand.
Cosatu’s Sizwe Pamla says this year alone 27 miners have died.
“It is the Chamber of Mines that actually lobbied against tighter regulations of the mining sector,” says Pamla, accusing it of creating widows and orphans.
“Workers sell their labour, not their lives and the mineworkers they kill and maim carry this economy on their backs.”
