Cosatu: Ramaphosa's done well in tough circumstances
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Trade union federation Cosatu's parliamentary coordinator Matthew Parks believes President Cyril Ramaphosa has done well in what has been difficult circumstances.
Parks was speaking at the Defend our Democracy gathering at St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town ahead of Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address.
But Parks warned that more work needs to be done.
"We do believe that President Cyril Ramaphosa has done well on many fronts. On very difficult circumstances, including just getting some of the basics rebuilt.
"Restoring a sense of law and order, accountability, beginning processes to appoint competent persons to the NPA, SARS removing some of the most compromising ministers from and those are good, but much much more needs to be done. We simply don't have the luxury of time anymore.
"We need a serene, coherent and united ANC, clean of the demon of corruption, factionalism, an ANC that can once again become the centre of progress," said Parks.
Meanwhile, the South African Communist Party's general-gecretary Solly Mapaila said corrupt political power is the source the country's crisis.
"We need the people to take back their power. We need to transform political power relations in the country and create people's power. In other words, transform parliamentary power as it is today. It is no longer serving the interest of the majority.
"We have many poor policies in our country and poor policy choices that benefit existing unequal power relations in the country."
