This is according to the University of Witwatersrand scientist Professor Bruce Mellado.

Mellado sits on the province's Covid-19 advisory committee and is leading the team studying the virus' patterns in Gauteng.

Mellado believes that the number of people leaving the province during this festive season may be lower than previous years, but not too low not to have an impact on new infections.

"People that will come back from vacation from other provinces that would be carrying the virus, will be significantly larger than the numbers in the province.

"And that basically create what people would refer to as a spike, and without a doubt that is a very serious concern," he says.

Mellado says the province has not seen a second Covid-19 surge yet, but that does not mean it is out of the woods.

"Believe it or not, pandemics can be slowed down and stopped through social behaviour, that is the weapon we have in our hands to be able to manage this thing.

"We have to remind ourselves that is was the actives of leisure that most European countries, especially in the Mediterranean, underwent a second surge."
