Crowthorne incident ‘attempt to keep Black child out from school’ - Makhubele
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
City of Johannesburg Council Speaker Colleen Makhubele has condemned the attack on a Black pupil at Crowthorne Christian Academy in Midrand.
Makhubele visited the family on Monday.
The school hit the headlines after a video emerged last week showing a 13-year-old pupil and her mother being pushed by one of the school’s officials during a confrontation about the child’s dreadlocks.
The school claims the hair to be in violation of its “no extensions” policy.
Makhubele says the school's conduct is immoral.
"We want to continue teaching people about this immoral behaviour. I feel it is immoral for kids to sit at home for three months because the teacher doesn't like their hair. This is not the behaviour we want to build on.
"We are calling for the Department of Education to look into the rules and code of conduct because this is a way to exclude black children from getting an education. Three children now have to be at home because you don't like their hair, and you chase them out of school, it is criminal, I think, and there has to be justice around this matter."
The principal's husband, Andries Booysen, who was seen pushing the pupil and the mother, has since appeared in court on a charge of assault.
The Gauteng Department of Education has since closed the school for illegally operating.
