A 28-year-old motorist is facing a charge of culpable homicide after he fatally knocked down a female Johannesburg metro police officer on Saturday.
The 37-year-old traffic warden and her colleagues were at an accident scene on the N12, between the Golden Highway and the K43, when the suspected drunk driver drove into her.
He then fled the scene.
“On Saturday 2 July 2022 at about 3am, JMPD officers and traffic wardens from by-laws management unit were attending two accident scenes on the N12 West between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park. Whilst attending to the accident scenes, a beige Renault Sandero drove at a high speed hitting a 37-year-old female JMPD traffic warden, Luleka Sobetshe,” said the metro police’s Xolani Fihla.
"Officers managed to apprehend the drunk driver and charged him with culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop at an accident scene at the Eldorado Park police station.
"The 28-year-old driver tested 0.69mg on a breathalyzer, which is nearly three times above the legal limit of 0.24mg."
The motorist is expected to appear in court during the course of the week.
